Beyond the Codes
R&D has enabled us to stay ahead of the curve in engineering design and sustainability while our clients who reap the benefits. Building codes are written to cover broad municipal regions. However, areas with unique topographies often require specific building methods to meet special seismic and structural demands. This is why BORM has worked to update and modify building codes for the purpose of establishing safer, stronger, and more sustainable building practices. The results have been municipal building code modifications that have made regional building regulations more applicable to the nature of the lands they cover. In partnership with the University of California Irvine, Santa Clara University and the University of North Texas, BORM has conducted structural integrity tests that aim to establish framing systems that go well beyond the demands of many existing building codes. BORM has also developed proprietary lateral systems featuring bolted special moment resisting frames that are superior to existing technologies. The result is steel framing that requires no welding, yet withstands all of the elements. Along with private-sector partners Lennar, USG, Nucon Steel, Louisiana Pacific, and Fairfield Development, BORM has been conducting materials research and developing proprietary fire, acoustic, and structural systems. Our comprehensive engineering approach creates an atmosphere in which questions are raised and solutions are provided. |
