Winning, in this scenario, means moving as little dirt and buying just the amount of steel and concrete necessary to construct a foundation that properly and safely provides support for the structure above. Project managers must act as “coaches” bringing the best out of the team and each of the players. They need to know what each player’s role is and what their skills are.

Abstract:  Builders are seeking alternatives to both the single-family tract home and the traditional high-rise tower.  In between is the new mid-rise with four to six levels of traditionally framed stud construction built over a concrete and masonry podium.  The upper levels provide housing and the lower levels parking and a business or retail occupant.  This roadmap seeks to highlight some milestones that need to be considered and addressed early in the mid-rise design process.
